Intermittent fasting to fight cancer

by - April 13, 2019

Intermittent fasting has been shown to have healing effects on people who have been diagnosed with cancer. In this article, we will be looking at, and analysing the reasons why intermittent fasting helps in healing Cancer.

Firstly, what really is Cancer?

We should first explain what Cancer and what factors lead up to it before we get to how intermittent fasting affects it.

Cancer is the uncontrolled division of cells which results in immune system damage, tumours, and other impairments. Cancerous cells do not die so that new cells can replace them. Normal cells die after some time and are replaced. This is in itself very dangerous because these cancerous cells use up nutrients that other cells would have used thereby causing damage to other cells.

These Cancer cells tend to build up in the body and cause tumours since they don't die.

What is intermittent fasting?

Intermittent fasting is the prolonged abstinence from food for hours at a time. It involves rotating through periods of eating called the Eating Window and periods of Fasting called the Fasting Window.
Intermittent fasting has gained much more recognition in recent times because it helps people to lose weight and has so many other healthy benefits for the body such as activating Autophagy.

Now, to what we're mainly considering in this article, how does Intermittent fasting affect Cancer? Does it have a negative impact or a positive impact? Well, studies have shown that intermittent fasting has positive effects on Cancer.

1. It helps in lowering the risk of cancer recurrence.

In a study conducted on Cancer survivors, it was demonstrated that fasting for more than 13 hours in a day led to a 36% lowered risk of recurrence of Cancer. Intermittent fasting lowers the risk of the cancer re-emerging.

2. It helps to trigger the cancer patients' immune systems to fight.

The human immune system in Cancer patients usually loses the ability to find and kill abnormal cancerous cells in the body which it does well to pathogens like Viruses.

Researchers have developed treatments to stimulate the immune system to find and kill these cancerous cells. But studies have shown that, coupling these treatments with fasting achieves the desired result.

In a study carried out on mice in the University of Southern California, it was shown that lab mice on treatment and fasting were able to produce more immune system cells like B cells and T cells that went on to kill these tumor cells.

3. It helps to reduce the side effects of the cancer treatments on the patients.

There are side effects to Cancer treatments- chemotherapy like Fatigue, nausea, vomiting etc. When patients were made to fast for a few days then eat normally before starting their cancer treatments, it was shown that they experience less incidence of these side effects when compared to the non-fasting group.

In conclusion, it is obvious that intermittent fasting is very beneficial to Cancer patients and survivors. Incorporating fasting into your weekly routine shouldn't be a big problem. Just choose the number of hours you wish to stay away from food and stick to it.

Intermittent fasting also helps deal with type 2 diabetes and heart diseases among other health benefits.
